Finishing up the fourth season of the First Thursday Jazz Concert Series at the Collingswood Community Center, 30 Collings Ave, Collingswood, NJ, on May 3rd will be saxophonist Larry McKenna, pianist Tom Adams, bassist Steve Varner, and drummer Jim Miller One show. Larry McKenna is one of the leading jazz saxophonists in America, and has performed as soloist with jazz stars such as Woody Herman, Clark Terry, Jon Faddis, Buddy DeFranco, Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, Bootsie Barnes , Frank Sinatra and many more. Pianist Tom Adams has appeared with such artists as: Bette Midler, Anita O'Day, Coolio, Jewel, Keely Smith, Linda Hopkins, Petula Clark, and Mel Torme. Bassist Steve Varner was born and raised in Tennessee, where he began playing electric bass, With ten years, he was playing the upright bass and touring with top jazz musicians. Now Steve regularly performs in New York and Europe with such jazz greats as Pat Martino, Phil Woods, Dave Leibman, James Moody, Ernie Watts, Billy Hart, and Patty Austin. Drummer Jim Miller was co-founder of the popular 80s jazz fusion group “Reverie,” and has performed at festivals, clubs, and colleges from New England to Florida and internationally from Portugal to Paris. As a sideman, drummer Jim Miller has recorded and performed with such notables as Ira Sullivan, Johnny Coles, Larry Coryell, Cecil Bridgewater, Victor Bailey, Anita O'Day, Bootsie Barnes, "Doc" Gibbs, Reggie Workman, Uri Caine, Mark Murphy, Randy Brecker, Buddy DeFranco. Clark Terry, James Moody and Dave Liebman, just to name a few. In 1986, Miller founded the record label Dreambox Media which won the Best of Philly Award in 1999 for Philadelphia’s Best Jazz Record Label.
